Godzilla vs. Kong, also known as "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster film produced by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, after 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and serves as a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.
Godzilla vs. Kong has eventually been released after being delayed from May 29, 2020 to March 13, 2020, November 20, 2020, and ultimately May 21, 2021. It will be released in the United States on March 31, 2021. The film was also accessible on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.
A follow-up sequel for the film is in development.
Godzilla and Kong are the only active Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla and Ghidorah battled and killed each other for control in 2019. A storm generated by Ghidorah combined with the storm cell that surrounds Skull Island has caused the climate to become unstable, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulates the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him with company and company.
However, when Jia comes to Kong and gives him a doll, the Titan, realizing that he is inside the biodome, quickly throws a tree at it.
Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons teams up with former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind as they search for a powerful energy source. As Nathan's brother tried to investigate the Hollow Earth, he was murdered by a tremendous anti-gravity field inside the tube. Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, which are modified ships that can endure the gravity field's pressure, according to Walter.
Nathan travels to Skull Island, where he meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews. Nathan proposes that they use Kong as their navigator to guide them to the Hollow Earth, as Skull Island is no longer able to contain him (because Kong has grown too large) and allow him to survive. Ilene Andrews agrees, and the two of them set out to find the energy source. Though Ilene initially refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off of Skull Island, she eventually agrees after being persuaded by Nathan that they must undertake this mission in order to halt Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home on the mainland.
Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex crew lead by Walter's daughter Maia board a customized boat where a barely drugged Kong is shackled to keep him from escaping. On a rainy night, Kong grows restless and upset and begins pulling on the shackles that restrict him, but Jia soothes him by allowing her and Kong to hold fingers in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The next day, Ilene tells to Nathan how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter when violent and unpredictable storms swept off the majority of the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the only survivor due to Kong's protection, which resulted in the two developing a relationship.
The Titan attacks the soldiers before capizing the barge and almost drowning Kong and the others on board. Finally, Nathan releases Kong's bindings, allowing him to fight Godzilla under the surface long enough to swim up to the surface and overturn the barge, saving the passengers from drowning. Then Godzilla leaps onto a nearby aircraft carrier to face Kong. Fighter planes successfully distract Godzilla before Kong can force Godzilla back into the ocean. Kong rushes off the carrier to dodge the atomic explosion, but Godzilla wraps his tail around him and drags him into the ocean, attempting to drown the Titan.
With no other choice, Nathan chooses to disable all the ships' power to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong vanquished. He swims away, satisfied with his victory, after examining the wrecked fleet. As they prepare to restart the ships, the crew decides to fly Kong to an Antarctica entrance site for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was initially frozen. Jia explains to Kong that his home is beyond the door, but he refuses to walk through it.
Walter plans to use the energy of the Hollow Earth to overcome Mechagodzilla's restrictions, it is revealed later. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the reason Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all of the Titans in order for humans to become the Earth's apex species. Madison and the others stumble upon a room where Ren is sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been turned into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla through radio waves after Apex acquired it from Alan Jonah after it was bitten off by Godzilla during his battle against Ghidorah five years ago.
Following that, Kong and Nathan's squad continue their trek, finally arriving to a massive stone temple that was previously home to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old fight between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they investigate within, while Kong discovers an ancient axe fashioned from a dead member of Godzilla's race's dorsal plate before sitting on a massive throne. As Nathan's crew discovers the power source necessary to supplement Mechagodzilla's power supply, Kong discovers that the same power source can also be used to replenish the axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the millennium's greatest discovery, Maia and the Apex crew collect the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters using spider-like drones. Maia directs her guards to shoot at Nathan's squad, prompting Kong to aggressively yell at them in defense. Meanwhile, Mechagodzilla starts transmitting a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and immediately rushes for Hong Kong.
Kong and Godzilla both recuperate and regain their feeting, with Godzilla on the lookout for Kong, who has taken refuge atop a tower. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point where he ambushes him from above and attempts to strangle him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slashing him with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong's attempts to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong restrained and held down, Godzilla roars violently at his adversary in a display of power, while Kong, beaten, angrily roars in defiance of Godzilla.
As though inspired by Kong's fortitude and skill, Godzilla shows pity and spares his adversary's life before fleeing, leaving Kong alive but severely hurt, ultimately losing consciousness due to commotio cordis.
Madison reunites with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie, who are happy to see Mark and ask him onto his show to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla suddenly approaches Kong, forcing the Titan to take his axe and restart the battle. Godzilla doesn't attack, but stares Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, ending the conflict between his species and Godzilla's. Godzilla and Kong are now equals, and Godzilla returns to the sea quietly, with Kong and all the people watching.
Later on, Monarch constructed an observation post in the Hollow Earth. Kong is seen by Ilene, Nathan, and Jia on his morning walk. Kong climbs atop a rock, banging his chest and embracing Jia as his new home and realm in his screaming proclamation of himself as King of the Hollow Earth.

The sequence in which Kong slams his right shoulder (which had previously been dislocated) against a structure to realign it may be a reference to Martin Riggs' famed ability of a similar sort in the Lethal Weapon series.
The sequence when Kong hops from ship-to-ship is comparable to a scenario where Eva Unit-02 jumps from ship-to-ship attempting to dodge an angel, much like Godzilla.
